Devolution Plans for Sussex – Have your say!

NOTE: 13 APRIL DEADLINE FOR THE CONSULTATION

There has been much talk about devolution in the press as there is currently an active consultation to collect our views ending on 13th April. Attached is a presentation shared with the Parish Council which helps to explain.

This structure has already been adopted in the majority of the country and now is being rolled out in the south. Key information is that we will have an election for Mayor in May 2026 and Mid Sussex District Council will run as usual until the end of April 2028 when it will be replaced by a mayoral combined authority including East Sussex, West Sussex and Brighton.

Devolution means drawing down more powers and funding to people in Sussex: allowing more decisions to be made locally rather than at a national level. The mayor and representatives each from East Sussex, West Sussex and Brighton would form a mayoral combined county authority for Sussex. The new combined authority would have powers for strategic issues including transport, housing, skills and employment, economy, environment and climate change, health and public safety.

The combined authority would work with local councils which would continue to operate most day-to-day services.

The implementation is confirmed, but a public consultation has been initiated to allow residents of the area to share their views.
